Lauren Jauregui Speaks Out Against Mike Pence and Conversion Therapy – TeenVogue.com

A lot of celebrities have come out against President Trump's administration for a lot of different reasons. From women's rights to Trump's anti-immigration policies, many have spoken out against Trump and his team both before and after the inauguration. In an interview with MTV, Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui also came out against Trump, but she made it clear that for her, it's personal.

As a child of immigrants, and a woman who identifies as bisexual, Lauren said many of the orders Trump has made in his first 10 days in office have personally affected her. She's not against the idea of Trump, she's against what he's doing to her and her family.

Well, I am a woman. One of [Trump's] first executive orders was to take away our rights to our bodies, Lauren told MTV. I am also a bisexual. His vice-president [Mike Pence] believes in conversion therapy. I am also of immigrant descent. My grandparents and my mom came from Cuba back in the 60s because they were fleeing from communism and Castro. I wouldnt be here otherwise. I dont understand whats going on right now it just doesnt make any sense.

Let's break this down. Lauren first mentions one of Trump's first executive orders, likely referencing the anti-abortion gag rule he signed that eliminated global health funding to organizations that counsel women on, refer them to or provide abortion. The rule will severely impact women's health services across the globe, and because the funding cuts are to all health funding for these organizations, it will also harm services like HIV/AIDs prevention all around the world.

Then Lauren moves on to the Vice President, who may have advocated for conversion therapy, which the Human Rights Campaign explains as "a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity or expression." More than 10 top medical associations, including The American Psychological Association and The American Medical Association, have renounced conversion therapy, saying someone's sexual orientation or gender are not things that ever need to be fixed. They've also outlined how harmful it can be. Lauren came out as bisexual in November, so it's understandable why should would feel threatened by anyone in the White House who thinks her orientation needs to be "fixed." It's not, however, clear whether Pence actually advocated for conversion therapy. Politifact notes his website during his 2000 run for congress said, "Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior." It's unclear exactly what that means, though it could point to conversion therapy.

Finally, Lauren lists one of Trump's most recent actions as one of the main reasons she won't stay silent about her political stances. Trump signed an executive order temporarily banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries - including Syria, where immigrants are banned from traveling to the U.S. indefinitely. It effectively closes the borders to people who are fleeing their own countries for numerous reasons, including an ongoing civil war in Syria, which really hits home for Lauren.

Because these actions are so personal to her, Lauren said she felt she needed to speak out - including compelling her to publish a piece against Trump's Muslim ban.

"It would be very hypocritical for me not to do everything I possibly could," she told MTV.

While Lauren said speaking out and participating in activism is a personal choice, she encouraged her fans to get involved when they really feel strongly about something.

"Whoever is reading this, make sure that when you agree with everything thats being said and when you feel passionate about your future, you take it into your hands," she said. "You do something."

Well said, Lauren.
