Mike Pence visits Steve Scalise in the hospital – Washington Examiner

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen Pence, visited House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and his family in the hospital Thursday morning, where the Louisiana Republican is recovering from a gunshot wound he sustained during a shooting Wednesday at a Virginia baseball field.

Scalise remains in critical condition after taking a bullet to the hip Wednesday and undergoing emergency surgery.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump went to the hospital to check on Scalise and his family Wednesday evening.

A spokesman for the vice president said Pence also visited Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot Wednesday while returning fire to the gunman.

In all, the suspected shooter, James Hodgkinson, struck four people: Scalise, Griner, a congressional aide named Zack Barth and Matt Mika, a lobbyist. Hodgkinson died of injuries he sustained during a shoot-out with Capitol Police.

Republicans had gathered at the Alexandria, Va. field to practice for an upcoming charity baseball game. The congressional baseball game, an annual tradition that pits Republican and Democrat lawmakers against each other, will take place Thursday evening as scheduled.

It's unclear if Pence actually saw Scalise in person. Reports indicate Scalise is not taking visitors.
