Public Relations For SEO: The Complete Guide

This is the first of a three-part article about Public Relations for SEO. Let me start by saying that a press release written, issued and leveraged properly, can result in word-of-mouth, articles paraphrasing the release, and at a minimum, at least some backlinks. But, a press release alone will get much less exposure than one coupled with outreach to individual journalists and bloggers directly prior to issuing it.

A few years ago, I launched a website called FindHow, and we gave it a full-court press from a PR standpoint.In this series of articles, Ill run through all the best practices we leveraged. Before we start, the results we garnered for our launch are shown below.

In the first month of FindHows existence, it surpassed 15,000 unique visitors and eventually grew to around the 100,000 uniques mark. After about five months, the Public Relations effort had resulted in a total of around 18,000 links to the site, primarily because of prominent media mentions that boosted the sites credibility and aided word of mouth:

The six Major Public Relations Steps that we followed, which can improve your SEO rankings and increase conversions are listed below. This article will cover the first two, and subsequent articles will cover the rest.

If you have not read Positioning: The Battle for the Mind by Ries & Trout, you should run, not walk, to your Kindle and download it. They make the point that when positioning a product, service or company, the most important thing is not the company or the product name itself its the category that it sits in and the trend that it relates to.

Unless youre Dean Kamen with the Segway, the press is not going to want to talk about your product, service or website if its in a class by itself. Its far better to convince them that there is a big trend going on, which you happen to be at the forefront of. You may (heaven forbid) even want to mention competitors to prove there is really a trend.

Ries and Trout point out that the best position to take in the mind is first, although its not the only position (you can position yourself as the alternative, for example, like 7-Up, the UnCola).

When planning the launch of FindHow, we decided that we would position it as a search engine, but clearly, it wasnt the first one; it was 15 years too late for that.

Agennix AG Provides Strategic Update Announces Extraordinary General Meeting

Munich (Germany) and Princeton, NJ, April 9, 2013 - Agennix AG (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: AGX) today provided an update regarding strategic options and its activities to further conserve cash. The Company continues to pursue strategic opportunities, including potential combinations with other life sciences companies. Agennix also is continuing to take steps to further conserve cash, including an additional staff reduction, as well as plans to de-list from the Prime Standard sub-section of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and list on the General Standard of the regulated market.

Additionally, the Management Board and Supervisory Board today have approved an agenda for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of Agennix AG to be held on May 22, 2013. At this EGM, the Management Board will discuss the previously announced notice of loss pursuant to 92 par. 1 AktG. The Company continues to pursue various strategic options and will ask shareholders to vote on two proposals, among other items, related to the future of the Company. These items are 1) a 20:1 reverse stock split, and 2) the liquidation of Agennix AG, the public entity. The liquidation of Agennix AG would eliminate the public entity but still permit potential transactions involving the Company's clinical assets and its U.S. subsidiaries as part of the process. The reverse stock split is proposed to reduce the number of outstanding shares to address the situation under 92 par. 1 AktG and to permit issuance of shares in connection with a potential strategic transaction. Management expects to make a recommendation by the date of the EGM to approve either the reverse stock split or the liquidation proposal, depending on progress made towards completing a strategic transaction and the nature of such a deal.

PM's word on illegal spying can't be trusted – Shearer

New Zealanders are losing trust in John Keys word after revelations he knew Kiwis may have been illegally spied on but failed to put a stop to it and covered it up for months, says Labour Leader David Shearer.

"In his own press statement, John Key revealed that he was told about a potential issue relating to legality in July last year. At the time, he shrugged it off and told his chief spy to just keep me informed.

"What he should have done was immediately shut down the spying until the legal position was crystal clear. The fact he did not do that is a dereliction of duty.

"The Prime Minister has sole democratic oversight of our spy agencies. He is responsible for protecting New Zealanders right to freedom and privacy. He has let them down.

"Bill Englishs excuse today for John Keys behaviour was that while there were red flags, the spies were confident they hadnt broken the law. But that doesnt make sense. If it was okay to keep snooping, why did they suddenly suspend operations in September when in the Prime Ministers own words the issue of legality was still unresolved?

"The Prime Minister only acted when the political heat went on over the Kim Dotcom debacle. He has failed to be upfront with New Zealanders. He knew about the illegal spying concerns for nine months but only told the truth about it yesterday. He covered it up and is now trying to do a snow job on New Zealanders by ramming through legislation to allow GCSB to conduct the same questionable spying in future.

"A quick fix band aid approach wont work. It wont restore New Zealanders confidence in our spy agencies. A thorough independent review of all our intelligence agencies is necessary before any reform takes place," said David Shearer.
