Amid Ukraine crisis, Europe weighs fracking

Fracking has transformed the United States into the worlds largest producer of natural gas, and now Europe is weighing the pros and cons of the controversial technique as it seeks greater energy independence from its chief gas supplier, Russia.

The move comes amid the unprecedented crisis in relations between Russia and Ukraine that began when Moscow annexed Crimea earlier this year and then threw its support to pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists battling Kiev.

An estimated 16 percent of Russian gas destined for Europe flows through Ukraine, and since Russia meets around a third of Europes demand for oil, natural gas and coal, the threat of gas supply disruptions through Ukraine has set off alarm bells in Brussels. Germany gets 40 percent of its gas from Russia; Finland, Lithuania and Bulgaria are 100 percent dependent.

A draft emergency action plan released by the EU last week says the 28-member trading bloc could attempt to break Russia's lock on European gas imports by developing domestic shale oil and gas reserves as well as investing into import routes that could bring Central Asian and Mediterranean gas to Europe, Reutersreported.

The latter might mean increasing Europes liquid natural gas (LNG) capacity in order to tap supplies in Africa, the Middle East and North America, where a shale gas boom has changed the United States from a natural gas importer to an exporter within the past few years.

Europes concerns over gas supply instability are well-founded. Over the past decade, Russia has halted the flow of gas through Ukraine three times, directly affecting eastern and southern European countries most reliant on Gazprom, the giant Russian energy monopoly.

In August, the tables were turned when Ukraine threatened to block Russian oil and gas supplies to Europe as part of sanctions against Russia, which it blames for a separatist uprising in the east of the country. A ceasefire was announced on Sept. 5 but it is unclear what effects the 12-point peace plan will have on regional energy security.

So how likely is it that Europe will developing a fracking industry on par with the United States?

The continent certainly has ample supplies. According to this Bloombergchart, the European Union has enough shale gas reserves to free the bloc from reliance on Russian energy for the nearly the next 30 years. Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, France and Spain have the most shale gas; Swedens reserves alone could provide 250 years of domestic production.

The big question, of course, is whether any EU governments could gain enough popular support for extracting it.

No 'knockout game' in Greenwich Township incident, police say

Emails circulating around oneWarren County municipality erroneously say the so-called knockout game is being played there, police said today.

Greenwich Townshippolice Chief Richard Hummer says a dispute between an adult and a group of juveniles Friday night was an isolated incident and that no one was assaulted.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. in the Greenwich Chase development, just west of Routes 519 and 22, with the juveniles on a sidewalk acting disorderly and shouting profanities at one another, police said.

The adult resident walked up and questioned one of the juveniles, sparking a dispute and call to police, according to a news release from the department; the juveniles left before police arrived.

Emails brought to the department's attention by the township committee made the incident out to be more than it was, reporting an assault and saying it was part of the knockout game. In the so-called game, an assailant -- primarily younger, and part of a group -- assaults someone at random and without provocation, in an attempt to knock the person unconscious, while someone else records it to share online.

"There was nobody assaulted, no punches thrown," Hummer said. "It was a dispute, it wasn't an assault.

"That did not happen. People are under the impression that it did."

No one has been charged with any crime in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Police ask anyone with information or questions to call the department at 908-454-1010.

Teen mob attacks three in knockout game outside Memphis Kroger in mess of blood and pumpkins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (PIX11) A marauding mob of more than 100 teenagers set upon three unsuspecting people outside a Memphis supermarket in a terrifying version of the knockout game, leaving a mess of blood and pumpkins in their wake.

The attacks, which targeted a 25-year-old man and two teenagers, were captured on video by a store employee, according to WREG.

A 25-year-old man was first attacked by the group before two Kroger employees, 17 and 18, tried to help him. The teenage employees fell victim to the rowdy group instead.

Both employees were then hit on the head and face. Pumpkins in excess of 20 pounds were also thrown on their heads as they lay on the ground, the teens reportedly told police.

They followed hitting him with a pumpkin. He was already unconscious, so all you could see was blood and pumpkins, a witness who is a friend of one of the victims told WREG.

The attacks caused the teens to lose consciousness. They were taken to the hospital and released to their parents.

They were playing a game called point them out, knock them out. Where they would point someone out and attempt to knock them out or fight them. There was no real reason behind it, a witness told WREG.

Investigators are working to identify those responsible. Police have arrested a juvenile seen in the video wearing a lime green shirt. He was charged with aggravated riot and acting in concert to: to wit aggravated assault, WREG reported.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said in a statement Last nights events clearly demonstrates a lack of parental controls and if warranted these parents will also be held accountable.
