APCs congress of disunity in AIbom

The just-concluded state congress of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has left the party more fragmented than before, writes ETIM EKPIMAH

These are not the best of times for the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The just-concluded state congress of the party has rekindled old rivalries among leaders of the four legacy parties which came together to form the APC.

Three, out of the four parties, are accusing the members of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria of hijacking the process.

Members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the All Progressive Grand Alliance are the ones on the offensive.

In February, some members of the state chapter of the party threatened to defect in their numbers if the national headquarters did not intervene in the simmering crisis.

The bone of contention is the alleged hijack of registration materials by members of the defunct ACN in Uyo and its environs.

They also accused the South-South chairman of the APC, Mr. Emeka Ekwauju, of providing a conducive atmosphere for this to happen.

This, they argued, was done to disenfranchise members of the CPC, ANPP and APGA, who are equal partners in the merger.

A former governorship aspirant of APGA in the state, Mr. David Ekanem, said two chapter chairmen were manhandled by thugs and security agents at the Silver Spring Hotel, venue of the collection of registration materials.
