Nigeria: Tejuoso, Monarch Back Reps On Temporary Voter Cards

By Segun Adeleye

Abeokuta The Ogun Central candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lanre Tejuoso, has supported the resolution of the House of Representatives directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow eligible Nigerians with temporary voter cards to vote in next month's elections.

Tejuoso, who spoke in Abeokuta on Wednesday during a visit to the palace of Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, stressed that the use of temporary voter cards, alongside the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would allow Nigerians to exercise their franchise.

This is even as Oba Tejuoso endorsed the candidature of Tejuoso for the Ogun Central Senatorial District, while also supporting the position of Reps on the use of temporary voter cards.

The politician emphasised that this became necessary in view of the fact that many Nigerians were unable to get their PVCs and expressed concerns that many may be disenfranchised if the commission insisted on PVCs for the elections.

"I am disappointed with the way INEC is going about the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards. Taking Ogun State as an example, the people of the state, especially the rural dwellers, are complaining bitterly about the shoddy way the INEC is handling the exercise.

"Even civil servants in the state are lamenting because a day the state government gave them for the collection of the PVCs is not enough; our people need more time to acquire the card. So I want to support the stance of the House of Reps on the issue.

"It is six weeks to the election and millions of registered voters are yet to collect their PVCs. INEC should allow those who have permanent voter cards to vote and those who have temporary voter cards should also be allowed to vote. This will ensure that no registered voter is disenfranchised."

Speaking on the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan since he assumed office, Tejuoso said the President has done his best but that his best was not good enough to take Nigeria to the desired place.

He, therefore, implored Jonathan to quit the stage for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, who he said would change Nigeria for better.
