Poll Shows Progressives Favor Warren Over Clinton By Wide Margin

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has repeatedly stated she does intend to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, but the results of a new Democracy for America poll suggest she is the clear choice among progressives.

Democracy for America, a progressive political action committee, said its Presidential Pulse Poll found that 42 percent of its members picked Warren as their top choice for President.

Support for Warren among progressives was nearly twice as strong as the level of support for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was favored by 23 percent of DFA members.

While Clinton is the prohibitive frontrunner in other surveys of all Democrats, she actually came in third in the DFA poll, behind Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., at 24 percent.

Warren, who has attracted a strongly following with her populist message, was recently added to the Senate Democratic leadership as Strategic Policy Advisor. She is expected to serve as a liaison to liberal groups after a lackluster turnout in the midterm elections.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain said, "The results from our first 2016 presidential pulse poll indicate that progressives want to hear from many candidates during the nomination process and that the fight for the support Democrats' grassroots base is far from over."

"The real story for us isn't the top-line results or even Democracy for America members clear interest in seeing Sen. Warren enter the 2016 race, but how committed our members are to ensuring the battle for Democratic nomination is a contest, not a coronation," he added.

The poll showed that former Clinton administration Labor Secretary Robert Reich was the top choice of 3 percent of DFA members, while just 2 percent favor Vice President Joe Biden.

Less than 1 percent of DFA members favor former Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, who recently became the first candidate from either of the two major parties to take the first official step toward a presidential campaign by launching an exploratory committee.

DFA said its members cast a total of 164,733 votes in the poll, with each voter asked to choose their top three presidential draft picks.
