Congressmen join Beshear on appeal for federal aid to Nicholas County – Kentucky Today

By TOM LATEK, Kentucky Today

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) Gov. Andy Beshears appeal of the Federal Emergency Management Agencys denial of federal individual assistance for Nicholas County residents severely impacted by severe storms in July, is getting the support of three members of Kentuckys congressional delegation.

On Aug. 19, the governor sent a letter to FEMA seeking a major disaster declaration and federal aid following for the July 29-30, 2021 severe weather, which caused extensive damage and deadly flash flooding.

On Sept. 5, FEMA denied the request, saying, It has been determined that the damage from this event was not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the Commonwealth, affected local governments and voluntary agencies. Accordingly, we have determined that supplemental federal assistance is not necessary. Therefore, I must inform you that your request for a major disaster declaration is denied. It was signed by FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell.

On Sept. 7, Beshear said he would appeal directly to President Joe Biden and sent his letter to the president two days later.

Support for that appeal has now come from Sixth District Congressman Andy Barr, R-Lexington, in whose district Nicholas County is located; U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Louisville; and U.S. Senator Rand Paul, R-Bowling Green. Those three had also sent a letter to FEMA in support of the governors initial request in August.

The new letter says in part, While the Commonwealth has provided support to Nicholas Countys 7,135 citizens, and local organizations have held fundraisers and processed donations, residents of the City of Carlisle and Nicholas County still face significant economic challenges, including a lack of adequate housing. Moreover, individuals potentially face job loss through the inability to get to work while also being unable to afford new modes of transportation. Given this, we believe that the Commonwealths appeal of FEMAs decision deserves your full and fair consideration.

Barr visited Nicholas County and the city of Carlisle shortly after the floods occurred. The offices of the three say they will continue to assist in flood recovery efforts in Nicholas County and be available to constituents who need help.
