Saturday kicked off the 125th year for the Convention, which ends Aug. 1 at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Kentucky's governor had a busy weekend, speaking in both Iowa and Georgia for the Democratic Party.

But on Monday, he was back in the Bluegrass State with other leaders from the commonwealth, speaking to thousands at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention (VFW).

The 10,000 VFW members and Auxiliary delegates at the conference represent the organizations total combined membership of more than 1.4 million.

Their mission is to help guide the VFW as it lobbies Congress on issues important to the nation's veterans, service members and their families.

Sen. Rand Paul talked about how he handles votes on war in Congress.

"To me there is no more important debate, no more important vote, than a vote on whether or not to send our young men and woman to war," he said. "I do not take this responsibility lightly; when war is debated I carefully weigh the arguments for war against the risks for each and every soldier."

Meanwhile, Gov. Andy Beshear thanked the veterans for the sacrifices they made to defend America's freedoms.

"I recognize that every opportunity that we have in this country, every opportunity that our kids that my kids have, is because of the service and the sacrifice of our veterans since the inception of this great nation," he said.
