Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) will launch his presidential campaign in Kentucky on April 7, but basketball could overshadow his announcement.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Paul will announce in front of supporters at the Galt House hotel in Louisville, one day after the NCAA basketball championship game where University of Kentucky is heavily favored in the tournament.

The undefeated Wildcats could potentially face Duke University, Pauls alma mater, in the finals. In 2010, Pauls rival for the GOP Senate nomination sought to highlightPauls medical degree from the hated out-of-state rival.

Following the announcement, Paul will jet-off for stops in the first four primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

Invitations for the event are already being sent out, although Paul could still decide against running, according to the Herald-Leader.

The New York Times has previously reported the April 7 launch date.

Paul has been a frequent visitor to the early-voting states, and hell return to New Hampshire this weekend for a spate of events with local political leaders, business leaders, and activists.

In addition to Paul, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) and Republican Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) are also likely to hit the launch button on their presidential campaigns at some point next month.

A new fundraising cycle begins April 1, giving candidates a full quarter to build their campaign war chests before the next reporting period in July. The official announcements of candidacy also allow the contenders to transfer money from their Senate reelection accounts to their presidential accounts, and move the political teams theyve assembled at their leadership PACs into full-blown campaign operatives.
