Sen. Rand Paul hints at past marijuana use

FRANKFORT, Ky., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) may run for president, and he may have smoked marijuana in college.

During an interview with the Kentucky television news station WHAS on Friday, Paul said he doesn't think using drugs is a good idea, but he made it sound as if he's tried marijuana.

"I think marijuana is a problem for our kids, and I think it's a mistake for kids to be smoking--even marijuana. Even though it may not kill you, I don't think it's good for you," he said.

When asked of his own past with marijuana, Paul said he "wasn't a choir boy" during college and that he made mistakes. "I can recognize that kids make mistakes, and I can say that I made mistakes when I was a kid," he said. He pointed out the last three presidents admitted to trying marijuana.

Paul has also lobbied for less harsh penalties for drug-related crimes.

"If your kid was caught selling marijuana or growing enough that it's a felony conviction, they could be in jail for an extended period of time, they also lose their ability to be employable," Paul said. "So I want to change all of that. I want to lessen the criminal penalties on it."

Paul also indicated, once again, that he may run for president in 2016. "We are doing things to be prepared if it were to happen," he said.
