Republicans rule in a few Broward enclaves

Republicans are used to being outnumbered in Broward. County Mayor Tim Ryan, an ex-state legislator, once said his former colleagues in Tallahassee referred to this county as "the Communist Republic of Broward.''

But five of Broward's 31 cities buck that trend, according to statistics from the Broward Supervisor of Elections.

They're some of Broward's tiniest, and toniest, cities: Hillsboro Beach, Southwest Ranches, Sea Ranch Lakes, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Lighthouse Point.

Four are beachfront cities. The fifth, Southwest Ranches, is out west by the Everglades, and is the only city that passes for rural in Broward.

In all five cities, Republican voters are the single largest registration group not necessarily more than half, but outnumbering those registered as Democrats.

For example, in Southwest Ranches, Republicans make up 41 percent of the electorate. Democrats make up 34 percent. And 25 percent are registered without a party, or under a minor political party.

Republicans are outnumbered by Democrats everywhere else, not just in every city, but in every city's political districts for city elections the sole exception being Fort Lauderdale's eastern District 1.

In some areas, like Parkland, the GOP numbers (34 percent) aren't far below the Democrats (36 percent).

And then there a small number of cities where the imbalance isn't as great. Plantation and Davie are two of them. In Plantation, Democratic voters are 48 percent, Republicans 26. In Davie, Democrats are 42 percent, Republicans are 29. Broward's "capital'' city, Fort Lauderdale, is 50 percent Democrat, 25 percent Republican.

But many Broward cities lean further left.
