"If you want to grow as a person, surround yourself with people who are better than you." This is a principle that I have always lived by. Thankfully, I am part of an organization of over 8 500 students in Ontario and more than 185 000 students across the world, who form this incredible mosaic of talents and aspirations. And every time I walk into a DECA event, I am surrounded by up to 18 000 people who are better than me. My name is Jerry Zhang, and I am a Grade 11 student at Bayview Secondary School, where I #39;m known as a country music fan (don #39;t judge), baseball player, "interpretive" dancer, and occasionally, "that DECA guy". I #39;m proud to be called "that DECA guy" this -- organization has given me opportunities that have changed my life. DECA ICDC 2011 was what inspired me to start my own business, Glowstik Social Marketing. I had the honour of being selected as one of PROFIT Magazine #39;s 30 Most Fabulous Canadian Entrepreneurs for this venture, and I have DECA to thank. DECA armed me with the skills, tools, and friendships that allowed me to try my hand at business. This year, I challenge each and every one of you to channel your energies and ambitions into taking DECA to the next level.
