EU's many troubles linked to socialism

Vern Zehr of Fisher in his April 14 letter took issue with Cindy Ihrke's assessment of Europe wallowing in socialist impotence and poverty. He suggests a time warp has kept her from noticing the "formidable" European Union. In truth, who can miss their formidable failures?

From Reuters, the U.N. reports the EU has the highest likelihood of civil unrest of any place on the globe. Then there's the promised, but undelivered, medical care of socialized medicine as reported in Forbes. Europe has massive trade deficits, the sovereign debt crisis, huge youth unemployment, major unemployment in general. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation, EU states are the top 15 highest tax states of the 34 developed countries it tracks. Oh yes, a happy blend of socialism is "EU"topia, according to Zehr.

It's easy to believe in socialism when on the receiving end. Could this be the motive for distortion of facts? Socialism doesn't care if there's a need or not; this gravy train rolls for special interest groups.

The economist, Walter Williams, reminds us picking the pockets of your neighbors using the socialist government gun barrel is theft by any other name. Sadly, this un-American game is becoming all too familiar. It has destroyed Europe and we're next.
