Moving forward in Scotland

Moving forward in Scotland

Commentary by Jeff Burgar for South Peace News

On a trip to Scotland a few years back, I found people friendly and weather fantastic.

Scotland is a land of socialism. Rampant and wild socialism. Few people work. They don't have to. Every level of government provides. Money for groceries. Almost free houses. Free medical. Cheap booze.

The best life is lived by local producers. With government support, farmers make darn good livings pretending to work 20 acres, and still be first in line at the local pub when afternoon draws to an end.

It's not quite paradise. Most days the weather is more Newfoundlandish but wetter, foggier and colder.

Worse, food is horrible. Scottish cuisine simply doesn't exist. There might be truth that Angus cattle, which originated in Scotland, produce a superior beef product. Maybe. Chains like Harvey's and McDonald's promote their Angus hamburgers. Many North American joints brag up their Angus steaks.

The truth is, this meat is all from herds in Canada or the States. Try to find a quality beef product in Scotland.

Better yet, try to find a quality cooked protein product such as pork, lamb, chicken, fish or beef. Darn near impossible.

Fish and chips? Horrible, horrible, horrible!
