Mila Whyte, 2, was a model of decorum at a public tea party in Fairfax on Sunday, but when the Queen of Hearts blew in complete with fire-engine-red hoopskirt, matching hair and attitude, a shriek escaped Whyte's lips.

As the queen swept between the tables at the sold-out English Tea Party at the Fairfax Women's Club, more than 80 adults and children oohed and aahed between bites of scones, cake and salmon sandwiches. The event was a benefit for Fairfax Parks and Recreation.

Along with the refreshments, the event included a performance by the Fairfax Theatre Company featuring the aforementioned Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse and other Alice in Wonderland characters.

Earlier, Mila, the 2-year-old Fairfax resident, introduced herself with aplomb to all. "I'm Mila and this is my mom Jennifer. What's your name?"

Similarly, Anya Mason and her BFF Maisy Schwartz, both 10 years old and Fairfax residents, were the soul of good manners.

"I think it's awesome," Mason said of the tea party, her first according to grandmother Anya Schandler.

The participants sat at nine tables resplendent with three kinds of jam, raspberry, apricot and strawberry, china plates and, of course, teapots steaming with herb tea. In the manner one could only expect of Marin, the tea sandwiches were made with whole wheat bread.
