Mailers muddy the issues in Peters-DeMaio race

SAN DIEGO Carl DeMaio is an openly gay Republican who says he supports same-sex marriage, equal pay for women and would not vote to restrict access to abortion.

So why is the tea party bankrolling his campaign for Congress, asks a mailer to voters in the 52nd Congressional District, where Republican DeMaio is running against freshman Democratic Rep. Scott Peters.

Turns out its not, or at least its far from being that simple.

Another mailer says Peters, when asked about the city of San Diegos pension deficit six years ago, replied said its not a lot money. Turns out he said that when comparing the average Jane and Joe owing someone money versus billionaire Bill Gates owing money and not the actual pension shortfall.

Each mailer contains misleading information and statements.

A recent California Democratic Party mailer is drawn from DeMaios December 2011 appearance before a San Diego tea party group.

His remarks at that gathering of the socially and fiscally conservative movement have been seized on by the Peters campaign and other opponents, who have been using the event to paint DeMaio with the tea party label.

At that session, DeMaio was discussing his candidacy for mayor of San Diego at the time when he made the remarks most often cited in the anti-DeMaio ads, including the Democratic Party mailer.

Carl DeMaio called tea party extremists the conscience of government, the mailer declares.
