Tea Party Republicans Much More Motivated Than Other Voters

In another troubling sign for Democrats, the results of a Gallup poll released on Friday show that Tea Party Republicans are much more motivated to vote in the upcoming midterm elections than other Americans.

The poll found that 73 percent of Tea Party Republicans are "extremely" or "very" motivated to vote in this year's elections compared to 57 percent of other Republicans and just 42 percent of non-Republicans.

Fifty-four percent of Tea Party Republicans also said they have given "quite a lot" or "some" thought to the upcoming elections.

Gallup said the results suggest that the Tea Party, representing about 18 percent of all adults, remains a powerful force despite what appears to be a lower profile this year.

The poll also found that Tea Party Republicans are much more likely than other Republicans to say the federal budget deficit and Obamacare are "extremely important" to their vote.

Meanwhile, Tea Party Republicans place less importance on issues such as equal pay for women and the availability of good jobs.

Gallup Editor in Chief Frank Newport said, "Although the Tea Party has been less visible in the election campaigning that has taken place this year in both the primaries and the lead-up to the general election, Tea Party supporters' stronger motivation to vote underscores the group's importance to the election outcome."

"Because most Tea Party supporters are Republicans or Republican leaners," he added, "the main effect of Tea Party supporters in the general election will be to provide a motivated base for the GOP to build on as it focuses on getting out the vote."

The Gallup survey of 1,252 adults was conducted September 25th through 30th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
