Staff at Barclays in the Isle of Man have helped raise over 46,000 for their Charity of the Year 2011, Hospice Isle of Man.

Each year staff are asked to nominate local charities which they think deserve to be the recipients of Barclays fundraising efforts for the coming year. The charities that receive the most nominations are then asked to present to the Charity Committee which selects the charity of the year. Hospice Isle of Man was set up nearly 29 years ago and provides specialist palliative care for patients and their families facing life-limiting illness and life threatening illnesses. All care which includes physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects and is provided by a multidisciplinary team is free of charge. Hospice provides inpatient facilities, respite care, therapeutic day care, specialist nurses, social worker, counselling, along with a range of complementary therapies and a Hospice at Home service.

Hospice Isle of Man also runs a childrens wing called Rebecca House. It is a purpose built facility which provides respite, palliative and end of life care for children with life-limiting conditions from birth to 18 years. Rebecca House offers a safe haven and a home from home environment in which care is offered and implemented in a way appropriate to the child and their family. Today Rebecca House looks after 25 children.

Throughout the year staff have been taking part in fundraising initiatives including, cake bakes, raffles, a marathon railway journey, dress-down days, the Parish Walk and even having the Easter Bunny delivering eggs! They have also supported events such as the Hospice Christmas Fair and Annual Dinner. All in all, through their efforts and the Barclays for fund matching, they have raised in excess of 46,000.

Chair of the Charity Committee Stuart Nelson said: I am delighted to be handing over a cheque for 46,000 to Hospice Isle of Man. It is great to see so many of our staff getting involved in fundraising activities and helping to build on the amounts raised for our chosen charities each year. I would like to thank Mary Doyle and the staff from Hospice for making our charity work in 2011 so enjoyable and I hope that the money we have presented to the charity will help them with the important work they carry out in our local community.
