Wikipedia editors can’t decide if Trump is the president yet – The Verge

Officially, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States at 12PM ET on January 20th, 2017, at which point the office of the president, along with its accompanying social media accounts, will transition to him.

But over on Wikipedia, things are a little more complicated. As a crowd-sourced encyclopedia, anyone can edit the pages, and the users cant seem to decide when Trump will officially take office. The Wikipedia page for president of the United States has been bouncing back and forth between declaring Barack Obama as the current incumbent and Donald Trump.

The page has changed back and forth at least eight times this morning

On the pro-Trump side of the edit wars are those who point out that the discussion page for the article had established that Barack Obama remains President until January 20, 2017, and that now that the date has arrived, the page is due for an update. On the other side are those who argue that until noon, Barack Obama remains president.

By my count, the page has changed back and forth between Obama and Trump to the tune of roughly eight times this morning which may seem low, given the tumultuous state of the changeover, but the article is actually a protected page, meaning only certain editors are allowed to edit.

Perhaps the editors pine for the days of print encyclopedias, when the minutiae of time wasnt an issue. It almost makes us nostalgic for afternoons at school digging through Encyclopedia Britannica. Almost.

Update January 20th, 12:01PM: The President of the United States Wikipedia article has been updated to reflect that Donald Trump has now been officially sworn in as President.
