Daniel Radcliffe has confessed his character in The F Word is the closest he has ever played to his real self.

The 24-year-old actor grew up on screen playing Harry Potter, and is known throughout the world as the adventurous boy wizard.

In new indie romcom The F Word, Daniel plays the awkward Wallace, who becomes friends with a girl who is already in a relationship, and becomes confused between love and friendship.

Daniel revealed at the Toronto Film Festival: "I definitely think that this is the first time in anything that I've done that I've been allowed to let a lot more of my own personality come through.

"And to be honest, what comes across as awkwardness isn't really me feeling awkward, it's me just stuttering a lot. It's not that I feel awkward, it's just that I look awkward, if that makes sense.

Co-star Zoe Kazan added: "I think what you're calling awkward is just that it isn't polished. We were trying to go for a very real version of a romantic comedy. We wanted to feel like people you know in your life, and not airbrushed - personalities and faces and everything."

In one scene, the pair had to jump into Lake Ontario in Canada. They joked that they were furious to learn afterwards the lake is known to be polluted.

Daniel added: "We were told it was going to be very, very cold, and it was freezing the day before, and so we were dreading it, but we did luck out on a nice warm night, and it was a lot better than we expected. But now I'm angry because I've just found out I've been poisoned!"
